What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy a unique and effective approach treating pelvic floor issues. It's not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy aimed at addressing issues related to the muscles, connective tissues, and dysfunctions of the pelvic floor. It's a detailed approach to functionally retain the pelvic floor.

Everyone has a pelvic floor and it's an area often not discussed with your primary care provider.

It involves exercises, manual therapy techniques, and education to help improve pelvic floor function and address conditions such as pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, diastasis recti and coccyx pain.

This therapy is performed by physical therapists who have received additional training in pelvic floor rehabilitation. Often, they are board certified.

Top 3 Problems Pelvic Floor Therapist Sees

There are many conditions that can benefit from pelvic floor therapy but the most common are:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Diastasis Recti
  • Pelvic Pain

Dr. Magarian stated that there are 3 things that she commonly sees in her practice.

Urinary incontinence

This can be common for postpartum moms, pre or postmenopausal women, and also men who have a history of prostate cancer. Often it's related to the lack of control or lessened control of the pelvic floor muscles responsible for controlling urination. This can be felt as leakage and is often not talked about.

It's not normal and can benefit greatly from a specialized care from a pelvic floor specialist.

Just because you hear "oh, I had a baby, of course I leak when I sneeze!" does not mean that it is normal. Just because something is common, does not mean that it is normal.

Diastasis recti

Diastasis recti is a condition characterized by the separation of the left and right sides of the rectus abdominis muscle, which is the muscle that forms the "six-pack" in the abdomen.

Diastasis Recti of abdominals

This separation occurs along the connective tissue that runs down the midline of the abdomen. Diastasis recti commonly occurs during pregnancy due to the stretching and weakening of the abdominal muscles to accommodate the growing uterus. I

t can lead to symptoms such as a bulging or protruding belly, lower back pain, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Treatment usually includes strengthening exercises to gain some strength back to the abdominal muscles.

Pelvic Pain

The third thing that is treated commonly in pelvic floor physical therapy is pelvic pain.

This can be from many different things, including from your lower back, but it is more common than you might think. I have seen so many patients have pelvic pain from nerve entrapment and pelvic floor weakness. This is a no brainer, and can be treated!

Physical therapists will do an extensive exam to determine the cause of the pain, and then give you exercises or stretches to either strengthen or stretch the pelvic floor muscles to help relieve your pain!

In conclusion, delving into the world of pelvic floor physical therapy with Dr. Jana Magarian, DPT, WCS, reveals a unique and intimate approach to addressing pelvic health. Operating as a concierge provider in Jacksonville, Florida, Dr. Magarian's model brings care directly to clients' homes, ensuring comfort and convenience.
